Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi's Life, Times, and Rise to Power Unthinkable just a generation ago, Hillary Clinton s run for the presidency and Nancy Pelosi s ascension to Speaker of the House have cast the spotlight on American political women as never before In theyears of this country s history, never has a woman let alone a mother and a grandmother risen to such a position of power as Nancy Pelosi did when she assumed her role as the first female Speaker of the House, third in line for the presidencyIn Madam Speaker, Marc Sandalow, an esteemed journalist and political analyst who covered Pelosi for decades, offers a richly nuanced portrait of the woman who made history He charts Pelosi s political roots, honing in on her father, who spent five terms in Congress and stored hundreds of copies of the Congressional Record under her bed, and goes on to examine how Pelosi, who didn t run for political office until she wasyears old, juggled her family life and fought hard to forge a place for herself in Washington, ultimately becoming one of the most influential voices in our nationBased on hundreds of interviews with Pelosi s colleagues, family, and friends and the Speaker herself Sandalow culls together insightful anecdotes and political analysis to chronicle Pelosi s meteoric rise and controversial tenure Madam Speaker illuminates the inspiring life of a woman who has already made history

Mostly fluff book Republicans love to hate her, Democrats don t necessarily love her either, but regardless of how one feels about Pelosi, her rise in politics is an achievement Born into a political family in Maryland, Pelosi s story of raising her children and deciding to enter office is still an interesting one The book takes the reader through the basics of her life, from growing up in Maryland, to moving to San Francisco, raising her family and eventually becoming involved in politics Cl Mostly fluff book Republicans love to hate her, Democrats don t necessarily love her either, but regardless of how one feels about Pelosi, her rise in politics is an achievement Born into a political family in Maryland, Pelosi s story of raising her children and deciding to enter office is still an interesting one The book takes the reader through the basics of her life, from growing up in Maryland, to moving to San Francisco, raising her family and eventually becoming involved in politics Clearly the book is written by a fan that focuses on her political career Her family is mentioned, but only as an aside They are important in her formulation of her politics especially her father , but beyond her children being envelope stuffers they don t take much spotlight.Instead we watch as she is involved with both local and eventually national politics Knowledge of California and San Francisco politics history is helpful, but it s not necessary But the atmosphere that helped shape Pelosi assassination of Harvey Milk, Jerry Brown running for President, etc helps provide a richer portrait The author is a former reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, so that probably helps he is familiar with his subject But it s not great in terms of writing style I find books written by journalists often to be a VERY mixed bag and this book feelon the negative side While I thought I got a good history, the style could occasionally be stilted or very and this is what she did next sort of thing. This came out in early 2008, so there s nothing about her role in the Obama administration I d be curious to read afull account of her life and career, which this really isn t

Breezy but informative account of her political upbringing, biography, and electoral victories I learned a lot about her and her policies Not a deeply reflective biography perhaps because it was unofficial.

I think since Pelosi didn t really approve the writing of this book, it s not as engaging I think it s just a basic tale, but, enjoyable for the politically conscious nonetheless.

Very readable, in depth account Sandalow writes at the very end, however one views Pelosi s politics or the decisions she makes on policy or strategy, her devotion to improving the lives of others is something to revere Many Americans cynically assume that most politicians are in it for money or glory Pelosi needs neither To assume otherwise is not to understand Nancy Pelosi The image of the first woman Speaker of the House with 50 children beside her as she gavels in for the first histori Very readable, in depth account Sandalow writes at the very end, however one views Pelosi s politics or the decisions she makes on policy or strategy, her devotion to improving the lives of others is something to revere Many Americans cynically assume that most politicians are in it for money or glory Pelosi needs neither To assume otherwise is not to understand Nancy Pelosi The image of the first woman Speaker of the House with 50 children beside her as she gavels in for the first historic time is one that seems out of a fairytale a beautiful, bright, life affirming fairy tale Glad to know this story and grateful to the writer for presenting it
